This was the kind of weekend when we are glad to have the rec building. At least when the weather is cold and rainy everyone has somewhere to gather in the evenings. We had the hockey game on the tv so that the sports buffs could keep up on the playoff action. There weren’t too many people out camping that could come to gather, but those that were here all seemed to end up in inside in the evenings. I heard a rumor that one site still managed to have a bonfire in the rain on Saturday. It is nice to see campers making the best of a rainy weekend and still having a good time.

On Sunday it was finally time for the duck roundup. We have been trying to coordinate schedules to get them back for a couple weeks and finally happened. We are glad to have them back and now it really feels like camping season.

Who let the ducks out? Quack, Quack.

They took off swimming as soon as they hit the pond.

Ahhh home sweet home

It didn’t take them long to get back to the old routine of swimming, sleeping, and begging for food.

We have had a couple Canada Geese visiting the big pond over the last few weeks. It is really interesting if you happen to be outside at the right time as they cruise over the tree tops and glide in for a landing on the water. They usually let out a few honks first to let you know they are coming. There were even a few wild ducks out there the other day.

Our weather still has not brightened up this week but I am not going to complain because I hear Alberta is getting hit with snow once again. We did actually see a little tiny bit of sunshine today but now it is back to pouring rain. I would like to believe the forecast that says we are going to see sunshine this weekend, but am having my doubts. Despite the rainy, dreary weekend there were still people in the pool and hot tub. There were 3 little girls in the pool and 2 dads in the hottub. I didn’t hear any complaining about the cold from the girls and they had a blast enjoying the pool all to themselves.

As I mentioned in the previous post we spent Thursday evening voluntering at the RV show for Manitoba Association of Campground and Interlake Tourism Association. Of course I took my camera with me so I could share some pics with you. Unfortunately we did not have as many people pass through the MACAP area as we maybe could have. There was some changes made during set up on Wednesday and we ended up on the main floor just inside the entrance. This did not turn out to be the best area since most people would just beeline up the escalator to get to the other floors. GNR brought a tent trailer to put in our area and Krevco brought a hot tub and some outdoor furniture. This was a help as it did draw some people into our area. We did manage to give out a few campground guides that evening and hopefully a lot more went out throughout the weekend. I heard a report that some of the dealers felt that this was the busiest Thursday they had seen in a while. I am quite sure that the weather was a big reason for that. I can tell that everyone is getting itchy to start camping.

Next we go to the Parks and Beaches area of the Manitoba Adventures display. We were volunteering for the Interlake Tourism Association and they had a big part of setting up this area. This was a busy section of the show as you can tell there was lots of stuff to look at and they had some highland dancers stop by and put on a show while we were there. I heard a rumour that the Eriksdale Creamery Museum was going to be there churning some butter on Saturday. A big Kudos to Gail From ITA, Jacques from Oak Hammock and everyone else that helped to set things up because it was a great display.

The show wasn’t just all fun and games. We did some work too. After much examination of the hot tub that Krevco donated to the MACAP site we decided it was time to upgrade our rental hot tubs.
We now are up to over 8000 fish in our stocked trout ponds and the fishing is well under way. We have moved from catch and release fishing to now catch and keep fishing. We are now also starting to sell rainbow trout fingerlings. Actually the fish that we are stocking range from 6-10 inches with most averaging 8-10 inches. We do have access to the smaller 4 inch ones but there are many advantages to going with the larger fish. We are finding that these are a cost effective way to stock your pond. The ones that we stocked in our pond grew to over 12 inches in just a couple months. After stocking this size of fish you do not have to wait long until they are ready to catch. The other bonus to the larger size fish is that there is less chance of losing them to predator birds such as the Cormorants. It is said that a Cormorant can eat it's weight in fish per day. If you have smaller fingerlings it doesn't take long for them to clean out your entire population. The larger fish are more difficult for the birds to handle plus they can't eat as many before they are full.
We found that when we were looking for places to buy trout fingerlings to stock our pond that we had to drive a long ways to pick them up. There was really nothing available within an hours drive of Winnipeg, Manitoba. We therefore have decided to fill that void and start selling the fish for anyone wanting to stock their ponds. We are finding that more and more people are interested in having backyard ponds stocked with trout.

It has been a busy couple weeks around here as we get ready for camping season to open on May 1. The Manitoba weather has not really been cooperating with the campground opening however. It would be much easier if we could get some warmer weather. There are some culverts that are still frozen and just won't open up.
Things are coming along but just at a little slower pace than we would like. The pool will likely be running by this weekend, but not warm enough to swim yet.
We have already finished a renovation on the rec building to add in a larger store area. The guys have just started on a pool area facelift and next up will be a mini golf facelift. The pool area is not going to be an easy job to get done since they have to dig out all the sod around the edges of the cement to make way for the bricks to go down. There is going to be alot of manual labour involved, but it will be worth it in the end.
Some of our seasonal campers have come out to check things and get ready for the upcoming camping season. I expect if the weather holds out we will see quite a few more this weekend. Hopefully the weather will cooperate to get some overnight campers out as well. Last year on opening weekend we had quite a few sites in the campground filled. I already have the camping cabin booked for this Saturday night. Saturday morning is our welcome back coffee break, where we offer free coffee, juice and goodies to all the campers and in the evening will be a movie night in the rec building.
It is hard to believe it when you look outside today, but summer is coming. In fact it is only one month until our campground is open. We are still hoping for an earlier start, but we need some cooperation from Mother Nature. I see by the Manitoba Parks website they start booking their online reservations on April 6, 2009. We have been taking our reservations all year and we already have some booked for the upcoming summer camping season. May long weekend is about 75% full right now. If we ever get some sunshine I don't expect it will take long to fill the other campsites and motel style room at our resort. The fact that the heated pool at our campground is open early May until Late September is a distinct advantage for our Resort and Campground. I know some campgrounds aren't planning to have their pools open for May long weekend.
We have finalized our off season rates and camping specials for this year and they are posted on our rates page. Our campground events and activities are also posted on events page. Make sure you stop by to check things out when you are planning your camping trips for 2009.

Saturday Feb 14 will be our annual poker derby. Hopefully we get a better day than last year - it was stormy and -40. We still had quite a few die hards, but a lot of people stayed home who would have come out had it been warmer. This year our derby happens to land on Valentine's Day, so I am not sure how that will affect the turnout. There is time for people to do the derby and then still go out to celebrate with their sweetie.Or stay here and celebrate. We will have the concession open all day and into the evening.
The breakfast starts at 9:00am with derby registration from 10-2 and last hand should be turned in by 6:00pm.

Many campers seem to sit and wait for opening day of the Manitoba Parks Reservation System to start planning for summer vacations. But, few people seem to realize that many private family campgrounds will take reservations year round. We are already booking campsites for 2009. After talking to other campground owners they have also noticed an increase in their reservations at the same time that the Manitoba Parks starts taking bookings. We would like to get the news out that people don't have wait, if you are starting to plan for next summer now feel free to book your campsite anytime.

Looks like there will be some sno cross racing nearby this winter. All the details are on theUltimate Canada MotorSports website http://www.ucmaracing.ca/. January 24 and 25 they have a snocross event planned for Little Mountain Park which is only about 10-15 minutes away from us. Then in March they are over at Selkirk for another event. I have heard that they are trying to plan an event for Stonewall, but have not heard the date yet. There are lots of great pictures on their website as well.

The camping cabin is almost ready for rental. Just a few minor finishing touches and it will be set for our first guests - possibly as early as New Year's Eve or the Ice Fishing Derby in January.
Some of you may be asking just what is a camping cabin? Well basically it is a very comfortable, spacious tent. The cabin comes with a double bed, a set of bunk beds, table, bar fridge, lighting and electrical outlets inside. Outside there is a covered deck, firepit, picnic table, and water tap. The campers need to supply pretty much everything that you would regularly bring camping - bedding, dishes, cooking supplies, etc.
The camping cabin rental makes it affordable for everyone to easily try out the camping experience. They may not be ready to put out the money for a camper yet, and may not want to go the tenting route. It is also perfect for a one time get together with friends and family such as a family reunion. We hosted 4 family reunions at our campground last summer and if we would have had the cabin I am positive it would have been rented out with all 4 groups.
If you are really looking for a relaxing cabin vacation you can also rent our hot tub and we will set it up right outside your cabin. There is nothing better than spending the evening sitting in a hot tub, gazing up at the stars. It is an amazing sight to see just how many stars there are in the Manitoba summer skies. With a little bit of luck you may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
I must admit that I am even looking forward to taking my girls 'camping' in the cabin this summer.
